Congratulations to Mike Dawson who was named the champion of the Bud Light Lime Steep Creek Championships presented by Thule at the Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado! Mike defended his title as the Steep Creek champion, a victory he held at last year’s Teva Mountain Games as well. “Luckily my Kiwi bro Sam Sutton made a few mistakes so I came out on top. It was a wicked day, won some money and now I’m just enjoying it,” Mike said after the race. Sam Sutton claimed third place and Nick Troutman came in seconds behind at fourth place.
The minute Mike finished paddling his last event on Sunday, June 3 at the Teva Mountain Games, he was off on a plane back to London to continue training for the 2012 Summer Olympics. 2012 is a huge year for Mike. He will be representing New Zealand in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and he is a favorite to win in slalom kayaking. In December, Mike is going to compete in the Whitewater Grand Prix in Chile. Only the top kayakers in the world are invited to compete in this elite event on a dangerous course of whitewater and waterfalls.
In the women’s division, Louise Jull from New Zealand took second place at the Steep Creek Championships and second place in the the Down River Sprint. Courtney Kerin won 3rd place in the Women’s Kayak Freestyle and Louise Urwin placed third in the women’s division for the 8 Ball Kayak Sprint.
