Pau Hana Surf Supply - FAQ by SchemaPlus

Question 1

How stable is the Big EZ Angler when casting, fighting fish, or carrying a full load of gear?

Accepted Answer

Stability is the whole point of the Big EZ Angler - and it shows the moment you step on it. At 36 inches wide, the board offers a seriously solid platform that stays stable when you’re casting, shifting your stance, or leaning into a catch. The planing hull handles side-to-side movement well, so the board feels predictable instead of twitchy, even when you’re active on deck. With 260 liters of volume and a 366 lb weight capacity, the Angler has no problem carrying a paddler plus a full fishing setup and extra gear without feeling bogged down. Add in the SeaMount® system, and you can dial in your gear placement to keep weight balanced, gear secure and everything within reach. The end result is a board that lets you focus on fishing - not on staying upright.

Question 2

I don’t fish, but I want a very stable, high-capacity board. Is the Angler still a good choice?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. The Big EZ Angler is one of the best options out there for larger paddlers or anyone who wants maximum comfort, and have confidence on the water. It’s often what people are really looking for when they ask about a “big guy” board - generous amounts of volume, real float, and stability that doesn’t disappear the moment you move around.Unlike standard sized boards that can feel undersized or sit too low for bigger paddlers, the Angler stays buoyant and predictable. Whether you’re cruising, surfing, paddling with a kid or a dog, have extra gear or just want a relaxed day on the water, it delivers a comfortable experience without compromises.

Question 3

How does the Big EZ Angler perform in different water conditions?

Accepted Answer

The Angler is built to handle a wide range of environments, especially where stability matters most. Lakes & Calm Water This is where the board feels effortless. The wide platform creates a steady base that’s ideal for fishing, yoga, families, pets or relaxed cruising. You’ll spend less energy balancing and more time enjoying the session. Coastal Water & Chop When the wind picks up or the water gets bumpy, the Angler stays composed. Its width, volume, and buoyancy help it ride through chop with confidence. Paddling directly into strong wind does take a bit more effort (that’s the tradeoff for stability), but the board remains steady when conditions get unpredictable. Shallow Flats & Mangroves Swap the standard 9” fin for a 4” flex fin and the Angler slips into shallow water with ease. This setup is ideal for fishing in the flats, mangrove tunnels, and shallow areas where you want access without constantly worrying about bottoming out. Tracking & Maneuverability The stock single-fin setup balances straight-line tracking with enough maneuverability for fishing environments. Shorter fins increase agility in tight spaces; longer fins improve tracking on open water. The Angler is designed to adapt to how and where you paddle.

Question 4

Can the Angler be used for activities beyond fishing?

Accepted Answer

Definitely. While it’s purpose-built for fishing, the Big EZ Angler is far from a one-trick SUP. Recreational Paddling Its wide, stable platform makes it an easy, confidence-building choice for casual paddling on lakes, rivers, and calm coastal water - especially for beginners or larger paddlers. Surfing Surprisingly capable in the surf. The wide tail and generous volume provide steady takeoffs on waves, and optional side-bite fins allow you to set it up as a thruster. It’s a great option for bigger paddlers or anyone easing into SUP surfing. Touring At 11’0” with plenty of volume, the Angler works well for short touring and day trips, especially when you want to bring lots of gear along. For long-distance touring, there are more efficiency-focused boards in the Pau Hana lineup, but for casual exploration, it gets the job done. Yoga & All-Around Use The ultra-stable platform and soft EVA deck pad make it a solid choice for SUP yoga. It’s also well-suited for paddling with a kid, a dog, or just enjoying a mellow session on the water.

Question 5

How does the Angler’s construction compare to other Pau Hana paddleboards?

Accepted Answer

The Big EZ Angler uses Pau Hana’s premium Ricochet™ Technology, placing it among the most durable boards we make. Ricochet™ is an impact-resistant layer integrated into our high-end epoxy construction, it’s designed to protect against rocks, paddles, gear, and the kind of abuse fishing boards naturally see. Compared to other Pau Hana constructions: Ricochet™ Technology (Angler, Endurance XL): Maximum impact resistance with performance intact Bamboo Sandwich (Big EZ Hawaiian): Durable, but not as impact-focused VFT & Standard Epoxy: Strong and reliable, with different weight and durability tradeoffs Inflatables: Ultra-portable, built differently for different use cases The Angler’s build is often described as “bombproof,” which matters when you’re launching off rocky shorelines, fishing shallow water, or loading the board with heaps of gear. It’s also designed to hold its performance over time, so it keeps feeling solid season after season. Pau Hana’s construction quality is independently verified through REI’s Product Impact Standards, where our boards score in the top 10-15% of outdoor brands.

Question 6

Can I stand and cast all day without losing balance?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Big EZ Angler is 36 inches wide with 260 liters of volume - one of the widest fishing SUPs available. It is designed to feel like a steady casting deck, not a balancing act. The Ricochet construction stays rigid under shifting weight, so you can move around the deck, cast, reel, and manage gear without fighting for stability.

Question 7

What is the Navio VFT designed for?

Accepted Answer

The Navio VFT is built for paddlers who want efficient touring performance with added stability and durability. It’s ideal for long flatwater paddles, fitness sessions, and light fishing or gear-carrying - especially if you paddle often or in varied conditions.

Question 8

Should I get the Navio or the Navio VFT?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Navio (Bamboo Sandwich) is lighter and more responsive - the better choice for personal use by paddlers who prioritize on-water feel and glide. The Navio VFT (Vacuum Formed Technology) adds a durable shell with Kevlar-reinforced rails that handles docks, rocky launches, and frequent use. Choose the VFT if your board will see heavy use, multiple users, or rugged launch conditions.

Question 9

What makes a quality hard paddleboard?

Accepted Answer

A quality hard paddleboard combines superior materials, expert engineering, and validated manufacturing processes. Key indicators include: Precision manufacturing (our perfect 10/10 Core Practices score from REI). Advanced materials selection (7/10 in Better Materials assessment). Proven durability testing. Professional-grade construction methods. Comprehensive quality control processes.

Question 10

What is a keel hull, and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

The keel hull runs down the center of the board and acts like a built-in tracking guide. It helps the Navio VFT: -Track straighter with less effort -Reduce side-to-side wobble -Feel more predictable in wind or texture For touring and fitness paddling, that means fewer correction strokes and smoother glide.

Question 11

How does the keel hull compare to a standard flat-bottom board?

Accepted Answer

Compared to flat-bottom designs, the keel hull: -Improves straight-line efficiency -Adds directional stability -Makes longer paddles feel easier and more controlled It’s especially noticeable on lakes, rivers, and open flatwater where tracking matters most.

Question 12

Is the Navio VFT stable enough for beginners?

Accepted Answer

Yes. While it’s performance-oriented, the Navio VFT offers a stable, confidence-inspiring platform, especially for beginners who want to grow into longer paddles or fitness sessions without starting on a basic all-around board.

Question 13

What type of water is the Navio VFT best for?

Accepted Answer

The Navio VFT performs best on lakes, rivers, bays, and calm coastal water. It’s designed for flatwater touring and steady paddling - not surf or whitewater.

Question 14

Is the Navio VFT good for fishing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The stable platform and straight tracking make it suitable for light, minimalist fishing, especially when paired with accessories. If fishing is your primary focus or you plan to carry heavy gear, a dedicated fishing board may be a better fit.

Question 15

Is the extra cost of a premium hard board worth it for weekend use?

Accepted Answer

While premium hard boards require more initial investment, their longevity and performance make them more economical over time. Our boards' 41.9% above-average performance in REI's assessment translates to better durability, stability, and versatility - key factors for regular weekend warriors who need reliable gear that lasts.

Question 16

What is the best touring SUP for large paddlers?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Endurance XL is a 12-foot hard touring SUP with a 415 lb capacity — one of the highest of any rigid touring board. Its displacement hull and 30-inch width deliver efficient glide without sacrificing stability for larger riders. Built with Ricochet impact-resistant technology and 35 SeaMount attachment points, the Endurance XL is purpose-built for big paddlers who want to go far.

Question 17

What is the best SUP for overnight paddle camping?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Endurance XL features a bivy-ready EVA deck designed to accommodate a full-size bivy bag, 35 SeaMount attachment points for gear rigging, and a 415 lb capacity for paddler plus overnight equipment. It is the only hard touring SUP designed specifically for multi-day expeditions — from gear tie-downs to sleeping on the water, every detail is built for overnighting.

Question 18

What is the most durable touring paddleboard?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Endurance XL is built with Ricochet Impact-Resistant Technology — a membrane integrated into the fiberglass construction that increases breaking strength by 3X compared to standard epoxy layups. It handles rocky launches, dock impacts, and loaded touring without the fragility of typical touring boards. Pau Hana Surf Supply ranks in the top 10% of outdoor brands under REI's Product Impact Standards.

Question 19

What's the difference between the Pau Hana Endurance, Endurance XL, and other Endurance models?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Endurance range shares the same touring-focused displacement hull and performance DNA, but volume and capacity scale across the lineup. The standard Endurance is best for average-sized paddlers focused on fitness and touring. The Endurance XL adds volume, width, and a 415 lb capacity for larger paddlers or those carrying expedition gear — plus a bivy-ready deck and 35 SeaMount attachment points for overnight rigging. The Endurance VFT and Endurance Air versions deliver the same touring intent in different construction formats for different durability and portability needs.

Question 20

How does the extra volume of the Pau Hana Endurance XL change how it paddles?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Endurance XL's added volume keeps the board sitting higher in the water under load, improving stability, glide, and efficiency for larger paddlers. For riders over 200 lbs or those carrying touring gear, the XL delivers less drag and more sustainable cruising speed compared to riding an undersized touring board. The displacement hull maintains its tracking advantage regardless of load.

Question 21

Is the Pau Hana Endurance XL slower than the standard Endurance?

Accepted Answer

No. When properly sized to the rider, the Pau Hana Endurance XL often paddles more efficiently than a smaller board overloaded beyond its ideal range. The displacement hull is optimized for smooth, sustainable glide over distance — not sprint speed. Larger paddlers will find the XL tracks straighter and requires fewer correction strokes per mile.

Question 22

Who should choose the Pau Hana Endurance XL over the standard Endurance?

Accepted Answer

Choose the Pau Hana Endurance XL if you're a larger or taller paddler, if you plan to carry touring gear, hydration, or overnight equipment, if you want a more forgiving and stable touring platform, or if you don't want to feel under-supported on longer paddles. The Endurance XL's 415 lb capacity and bivy-ready deck make it the better choice for loaded touring and multi-day expeditions.

Question 23

Is the Pau Hana Endurance XL beginner-friendly?

Accepted Answer

Yes — especially for larger beginners. The Pau Hana Endurance XL's added width and volume make the board feel more confidence-inspiring than undersized touring boards, while still delivering the efficiency and tracking benefits of a displacement hull. It's a board that supports new paddlers from day one and rewards improving fitness and technique over time.

Question 24

How does the Pau Hana Endurance XL compare to an all-around SUP?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Endurance XL tracks straighter, glides more efficiently, and feels significantly better over long distances than an all-around board. Its displacement hull is designed to cut through water rather than ride on top of it, reducing fatigue on multi-mile paddles. If short turns or surf are the goal, an all-around board like the Pau Hana Oahu is better suited. If distance, efficiency, and loaded touring matter, the Endurance XL is purpose-built for the job.

Question 25

What if I'm between sizes in the Pau Hana Endurance range?

Accepted Answer

Size up. Most paddlers are happier on a touring board with slightly more volume than one that feels under-supported — especially for fitness paddling and loaded touring. The Pau Hana Endurance XL's 415 lb capacity gives you headroom for gear, hydration, and changing conditions without sacrificing glide or tracking.

Question 26

Will I outgrow the Pau Hana Endurance XL as my skills improve?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely. The Pau Hana Endurance XL is designed to support paddlers as they progress — offering stability and forgiveness early on, and efficient displacement-hull glide as skills and fitness improve. The 35 SeaMount attachment points and bivy-ready deck mean the board grows with your ambitions, from day paddles to multi-day expeditions.

Accepted Answer

Pau Hana Surf Supply stands behind every board, with a 120-day warranty and clear return support. We'd rather help you find the right paddleboard than sell you the wrong one.

Question 39

How does the Big EZ Hawaiian Air compare to the hard board version?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian Air shares the same wide, stability-first shape as the hard Big EZ Hawaiian but in drop-stitch inflatable construction. The hard board delivers better glide, rigidity, and on-water responsiveness. The Air version adds portability - it packs into a bag for apartment storage, car trunks, and travel. At 32 inches wide with 255 liters of volume, both feel planted and forgiving for beginners.

Question 40

Can I leave the Big EZ Hawaiian Air inflated for the season?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian Air can be left inflated for short periods, but prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and heat will increase internal pressure and can damage the seams over time. For longest board life, deflate and store in a cool, shaded place between sessions - especially in hot climates. If leaving it inflated, reduce PSI slightly and keep it out of direct sun.

Question 41

What was the first beginner-friendly paddleboard?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian, introduced in 2007, was one of the first stand up paddleboards designed specifically for beginners. Designed by Todd Caranto, it prioritized stability and accessibility when the rest of the industry focused on extreme performance. The Big EZ's 11-foot, 32-inch wide platform set the template that made SUP a mainstream sport.

Question 42

What makes the Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian Air different from a standard all-around inflatable paddleboard?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian Air is built for maximum stability first - not just versatility. At 11' long and 32" wide with 255 liters of volume, it offers a noticeably wider, more confidence-inspiring platform than most all-around boards in this size class. It's especially well-suited for beginners, families, and casual paddlers who want a board that feels planted and secure from the first stroke.

Question 43

Is the Big EZ Hawaiian Air too stable or too large for solo paddling?

Accepted Answer

Not at all. While the Big EZ Hawaiian Air is one of the most stable inflatable SUPs available at 32" wide, it still paddles smoothly and tracks predictably for solo use. Many experienced paddlers choose it specifically for the relaxed, planted feel - especially on longer flatwater sessions where comfort matters more than speed.

Question 44

How does the Big EZ Hawaiian Air handle compared to narrower inflatable paddleboards?

Accepted Answer

The Big EZ Hawaiian Air turns a bit slower than narrower boards - by design. At 32" wide, the tradeoff is calm, predictable handling that feels forgiving in wind, boat wake, or when sharing the board with a passenger. Paddlers coming from narrower 30" boards will notice the added stability immediately, especially in choppy conditions.

Question 45

Is the Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian Air a good paddleboard for larger or heavier riders?

Accepted Answer

Yes. With a 338 lb weight capacity, 32" width, and 255 liters of volume, the Big EZ Hawaiian Air is one of the best inflatable SUPs for larger or taller paddlers who want stability without stepping into a specialty board. The marine-grade PVC drop-stitch construction maintains rigidity even under heavier loads.

Question 46

Can I paddle with a dog or child on the Big EZ Hawaiian Air?

Accepted Answer

Yes - the Big EZ Hawaiian Air is one of the most popular inflatable paddleboards for paddling with dogs and kids. The 32" wide deck and 338 lb capacity provide a stable platform for a second passenger, and the extra-soft EVA deck pad gives pets and children a comfortable, grippy surface. Always paddle within safe limits and conditions.

Question 47

Is the Big EZ Hawaiian Air suitable for SUP fitness or exercise?

Accepted Answer

The Big EZ Hawaiian Air works well for yoga, core work, and light fitness paddling thanks to its ultra-stable 32" platform and cushioned EVA deck pad. However, if speed, stroke efficiency, or long-distance training is your primary goal, a touring board like the Pau Hana Endurance will deliver better glide and tracking over time.

Question 48

How do the Big EZ boards compare?

Accepted Answer

All Big EZ boards share the same core idea - maximum stability and ease of use - but they’re built for very different paddlers and environments. Big EZ Hawaiian: Designed for personal and family use. Lighter and easier to handle, with the SeaMount® system and a classic all-around shape that works on lakes, bays, and small surf. Best for beginners, families, and casual paddlers who want one board to share. Big EZ VFT: Built with Vacuum Formed Technology for added durability while keeping the same stable Big EZ feel. Ideal for paddlers who want a tougher board for frequent use, without stepping all the way up to a full livery board. Big EZ Angler: A fishing-specific Big EZ with extra width, higher volume, SeaMount® system, and through-holes for anchoring. Built for stability while casting, standing, and managing gear. Best for anglers or larger paddlers. Big EZ Air: An inflatable version of the Big EZ, offering the same confidence-inspiring stability in a travel-friendly, easy-to-store package. Ideal for paddlers who need portability but still want a wide, forgiving platform. Big EZ Livery: The most rugged option in the lineup. Built with VFT construction and reinforced materials for rentals, camps, resorts, and high-traffic programs. Designed to handle constant use by beginners with minimal maintenance. In short: Choose the Big EZ Hawaiian for personal, everyday fun. Choose VFT or Livery when durability and frequent use matter. Choose Angler for fishing and gear. Choose Air for travel and storage convenience. If you’re not sure, start with how often the board will be used and who will be using it - that usually points to the right Big EZ.

Question 49

Can the Big EZ VFT handle dock launches and rocky beaches?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian VFT uses Vacuum Formed Technology with Kevlar-reinforced rails - a construction specifically designed to handle dock scrapes, beach landings, and the bumps that come with regular use. A self-regulating Gore-Tex vent plug manages internal pressure changes in sun and heat.

Question 50

Is 34 inches too wide for efficient paddling?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian VFT is 34 inches wide - deliberately wider than most all-around boards to maximize stability for beginners, families, and larger riders. The tradeoff is a slightly wider paddle stroke, but for casual cruising, yoga, and easygoing sessions, the added confidence underfoot is worth more than marginal speed.

Question 51

Can I use the Big EZ VFT for SUP yoga?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian VFT is one of the widest all-around SUPs in the lineup at 34 inches, making it a stable platform for SUP yoga poses and flows. The VFT construction stays rigid under shifting weight, and the soft EVA deck pad provides cushioning during floor-based movements.

Question 52

Can I use the Big EZ VFT for casual fishing?

Accepted Answer

The Pau Hana Big EZ Hawaiian VFT handles casual fishing on calm water, but it is not a dedicated fishing board -it lacks the through-holes found on the Big EZ Angler for staking and won't be able to hold as much gear. If fishing is your main use and you plan to add rod holders, electronics, or anchor frequently, the Big EZ Angler is the better choice.
